Watch That Exec Tree Grow!

The Dean of Miami’s Regional campuses has become our newest Vice-President at Miami. Let’s celebrate the occasion by playing a fun game: “Watch That Exec Tree Grow!”

Watch for yourself:

Chart does not include two additional vice-presidents added in 2021.

Since 2017-2018, Miami’s high-paid executive cabinet has almost doubled.

Back in 2017, Miami had six vice-presidents. In 2021, we have 11. The lower chart (2020-2021) doesn’t yet include the new Regionals Vice-president or the new Vice-president for Research & Innovation (who just left after less than a year, so we need to hire a replacement). Also not visible on the chart: Miami added a high-paid associate provost position this year.

The high-paid executive tree is growing fast.

Meanwhile, Miami is bleeding full-time faculty. Over 150 full-time faculty lost their jobs in 2020. Perhaps 40 full-timers have been hired this year, most of them lower-paid non-tenure-track faculty — but that doesn’t come close to replacing the losses. Or to reinvigorating the teacher-scholar mission that once made Miami such a special place for students. And enrollments are higher than ever. Extra sections will mostly be covered by part-timers making well under 3K per course with no benefits, job security, or possibility of promotion.

Overgrowth at the top while the roots are cut bare — who’s served by this?

Not Miami students.
