AAUP-AFSCME Solidarity Meeting, April 5

We’re having a meeting/party to support Miami’s hardworking physical facilities staff as they prepare to renegotiate their contract. They keep campus safe, clean and beautiful; faculty and students benefit from their work every day.

Meanwhile, their numbers have been slashed so they all have more work to do, they are frequently denied holiday requests and must work a lot of overtime, their schedules are inflexible, and they do it all for under $15 an hour—most of them for significantly less.

Let’s turn out, share food and drink, and show our support! See you Tuesday, April 5, at 5:30pm, in Shideler 237, Oxford campus.

If you’d like to let us know you plan to come, here’s the Facebook event page.

[UPDATE: Here’s The Miami Student’s April 12, 2016 article on the solidarity meeting, with quotes from AFSCME local chapter president Dusty Jones and others. “Many workers in [Jones’] chapter…have been forced to double their workload and change their work routines due to understaffing. ‘The staff in housing was cut in half,’ Jones said. “So many things we used to do haven’t been done since 2008. We used to clean toilets three times a day, now only once. Cleaning the banisters hasn’t been done since J-Term, but since norovirus [hit campus], they are paying people overtime to come in and do the work we used to do every day.’”]
